Petit Basset Griffon Vendeén

The French breed standard was written in 1944 by a man named Abel Desamy. In the beginning it was allowed to cross PBGV with its bigger cousin Grand Basset Griffon Vendeén but since 1977 this is prohibited. It is extremely difficult to translate a Breed standard and since English is not my native language I will not even try.

The PBGV is a spirited dog that despite its size needs a lot of exercise. You will find that most breeders in Sweden only sell their puppies to hunters. The general opinion is that PBGV is a hound and that it should be given the opportunity to do what it do best, that is to hunt. The breed is full of independence but like the company of a fellow human   as well as other dogs. Tiny pets like rabbits and guinneapigs tends to be a bit of a problem for some individuals of the breed due to their strong hunting instincts.

The first PBGV came to Sweden 1973. His name was Hubbestads Harold and he was named after the great department store Harrods in England where he was purchased. Later on he turned out to be a Grand. The first Swedish PBGV litter was born in 1977. The English import Akerwood Alpha was mated to Harold. They had two litters together.  In 2003 there where 324 PBGV pups registered in Sweden. Note: In Sweden it is not allowed to register only one or two pups from a litter, you must register the hole lot.

In 1999 we were 96 PBGV breeders in Sweden. If you are interested in PBGV, especially the Swedish ones, please join the Swedish PBGV club.
